Amaechi asks UK to reverse anti Niger Delta travel policy
National News Sep 19, 2009

By George Onah, Port Harcourt
The Rivers State Government has appealed to the British Government to reverse its travel advice policy banning trips to the Niger Delta axis by its citizens.

Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi who met with the British High Commissioner to Nigeria Bob Dewar, in Port Harcourt, yesterday, said the call had become necessary because of the improved security situation in the region.

Amaechi explained that citizens of other countries, including French nationals and other Europeans had made regular visits, and carried out several activities in the region including the celebration of their national days.

He asked the British Government to partner with the state government to further improve the security situation in the region for business activities to thrive, adding that Rivers State Government had been partnering with the British Council, stating that the key to the problem in Niger Delta was education and health.

Amaechi was of the view that the Federal Government amnesty programme was working as more militants were embracing the offer, pointing out that the state government would be glad to work with the British Government to strengthen the peace already achieved.

Cant it be said that UK's policies also contributed to the condition of the Niger-Delta today?

The sooner they oblige Gov Amaechi the better for us all
