Fake Boyloaf extorted N10m monthly from Bayelsa Gov
« on: August 28, 2009, 09:07:03 PM »
Until the factional leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta (MEND, Mr. Ebikabowei Victor Ben, aka Boyloaf, came out from the creeks recently, an impostor was extorting a whopping N10 million monthly from a state governor using his name.

Revealing this in Lagos, during an interactive session with senior editors, Bayelsa State governor, Mr. Timipre Sylva, said that the impostor presented himself as Boyloaf and threatened the state governor that his group would unleash terror in his state unless he was paid N10 million monthly.

He revealed that the state governor, afraid that a MEND problem would not be good for him, agreed to the deal and paid religiously until the original Boyloaf came out from the creek and the governor discovered that he had been dealing with an impostor.

“Until Boyloaf came out, people did not know him. So, somebody was collecting money claiming to be him. And when eventually he appeared on television the governor said that this is not the person who had been coming here,” Sylva said.
The governor said that the amnesty deal of the Federal Government was, therefore, auspicious, as some of those who were parading themselves as militants and extorting money from government and people had been exposed.

He said that since nobody knew the faces of the leaders of the militant groups, people actually posed as them and extorted money with the threat that if such money was not paid, they would cause trouble.
Sylva expressed happiness over the success of the amnesty granted militants by the Federal Government, saying more progress would be made in the region when there is peace.
He said that the Niger Delta region has always benefited in time of peace and, therefore, should not resort to violence, which would not help the region get what it wants.
