Jonathan Accepts Nwodo as Consensus Candidate
« on: June 06, 2010, 10:57:33 PM »
resident Goodluck Jonathan is to formally present Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo to members of the national caucus, Board of Trustees (BoT) and National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at different meetings holding between today and Tuesday as the National Chairman-designate. Jonathan endorsed Nwodo after governors and other stakeholders from the South-east zone, on Friday night at a meeting in Abuja, unanimously recommended the former scribe of the party.

THISDAY checks at the meeting reveal that the President said since the party leaders in the zone had decided on their choice, he will go ahead and present him to the relevant organs of the party as the new chairman.

The National Chairman-designate had served as national secretary of the party during former Presi-dent Olusegun Obasanjo’s first term in office.

Our source also said that present at the meeting, where the name of Nwodo was presented to the president,  were Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu; Governors Ikedi Ohakim, Sullivan Chime and Martin Elechi of Imo, Enugu and Ebonyi States respectively and  the Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Hon. Emeka Ihedioha. Also present at the meeting was Chief of Staff to the president, Chief Mike Oghiadome.

The group, THISDAY also gathered, regrouped at the Imo State Governor’s Lodge, to review the outcome of their meeting with Jonathan.

At the lodge, it was further learnt that the three governors had another session with Nwodo to brief him about their discussion with the President on the matter and told him that the President has accepted his nomination as PDP’s national chairman.

Giving more insight into the matter, the source said: “Barring any last minute changes, which I doubt, President Jonathan will present Nwodo to the national caucus, BoT and the NEC in that  as the next national chairman for ratification and these are mere formalities.”

According to an advertorial signed by the former governor of Nasarawa State, who is also the outgoing secretary of the PDP BoT,  Alhaji Abdullahi Adamu, tomorrow’s meeting of the body is expected to hold at the Presidential Villa, Abuja .

Meanwhile, in line with the truce reached between the National Working Committee (NWC) and the Reform Forum of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the party yesterday officially accepted the recommendations from the Reform group for constitutional and administrative amendments.

Receiving the group’s recommendations for administrative and constitutional amendments, the National Secretary of PDP, Alhaji Abubakar Kawu Baraje, said the recommendations submitted by the leader of the Reform Group, Dr. Abiye Sekibo would receive utmost attention in the overall interest of the party.

According to the PDP National Secretary, “what you have submitted would be passed on to the National Working Committee (NWC) and the National Executive Committee (NEC) for attention and action. Those that require administrative action would be so treated, while those that require constitutional amendments would be sent straight to the NEC for action.”

The National Secretary who informed the group that PDP has commenced reforms when the present NWC assumed office, further said the impunity of “garrison politics” of past executives are gone, while assuring  that internal democracy has since returned to the party.
