NUPENG wants more LGs for Niger Delta
« on: November 25, 2009, 05:31:45 AM »
NUPENG has appealed to the federal government to facilitate the creation of more local governments in the core states of the Niger Delta to facilitate development.
This was contained in the union's statement signed by its president, and secretary, Messrs Peter Akpatason and Elijah Okougbo respectively, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Lagos.
According to the union, such a development will accelerate national integration and the union further demanded that more jobs to be created by all tiers of government in the region for the benefit of the unemployed youths.
The union also said that the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) pending at the National Assembly should be expanded to accommodate the payment of some form of royalties to oil producing communities.
It further called for the increase of the derivation fund to oil producing states, from 13 to 25 per cent.
``There is the need for rapid infrastructural and human capital development of the Niger Delta region through government intervention’’, it said.
The NUPENG urged state governments in the region to accord the needed priority to the development of education.
The union called on all disarmed militants to continue to embrace dialogue and work towards the realization of lasting peace in the region.
